SUMMARY:Breeding Bird Atlasing - Kelly Hollow Loop
DESCRIPTION:We are currently in the fourth year of the New York State Breeding Bird Atlas III. Volunteer citizen scientists across the state have been recording the breeding behaviors of our local bird species in order to better inform conservation efforts and assess the status of species. Spend the morning atlasing in western Ulster County in the Arena CE priority block. The Kelly Hollow Loop follows an old road and passes through a spruce forest that was planted in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. We’ll be looking for breeding behaviors including courtship\, nest building\, parents carrying food and/or feeding young as well as the presence of fledglings \nMeet at the traffic circle in Kingston at 6:30 am to carpool. The drive is a little over an hour. Registration is required. Please contact regional coordinator Wendy Tocci (wtocci@gmail.com) if interested.

SUMMARY:SUNDOWN FOREST OPEN DISCOVERY
DESCRIPTION:Sundown Wild Forest is located in the southern Catskills. We will explore the flora and fauna in this mature second growth forest. Forest succession and regrowth will be discussed. We will walk on trails for the most part\, with short forays off-trail. Trail conditions are generally good\, with some short steep slopes and occasional downed trees to navigate. Please register with George Moxham (gfmoxham@gmail.com) for details. Participation is limited due to parking availability.

SUMMARY:GRASSLAND BIRD WALK AT THE FARM HUB
DESCRIPTION:Please email trip leader Applied Farmscape Ecology Program Coordinator Teresa Dorado (tdorado@hvfarmhub.org) to participate on this outing. Registration will be limited. This is a rare opportunity to visit what has become a desirable location for breeders like Horned Lark illustrating the improved farming practices of this property as it leaves behind it’s old monoculture ways.

SUMMARY:DRY BROOK RIDGE HIKE
DESCRIPTION:We will travel to Hardenburgh and hike to Dry Brook Ridge\, starting at the Millbrook Road trailhead. The hike will be about 8.5 miles out & back with an elevation gain of 2500′. This will be combined hiking and breeding bird atlasing\, so plan for about 8 hours total. We will meet at 6:30AM at the park & ride near the Kingston traffic circle and car pool from there. Bring lunch\nand plenty of water. The drive will take about an hour. \nSome Dry Brook Ridge facts from Dr. Michael Kudish’s book The Catskill Forest: A History. The ridge lacks any spruce or fir (only reaching 3465') but has 3-1/2 miles of first-growth forest\, with the trail right through the middle. It also features several bogs\, the oldest radiocarbon-dated at 6\,980 years old. We will stop for lunch and views at Penguin Rocks\, a large 270-foot talus slopes. If lucky we will find three-toothed cinquefoil here\, an arctic tundra species seen in only 8 other places in the Catskills. It’s presence that forest never covered this site since the ice age. \nPlease register with and send any questions to David Hayes (vireo44@gmail.com).

SUMMARY:DAMSELS AND DRAGONS AT BURROUGHS SANCTUARY
DESCRIPTION:Join local aquatic ecologist and nature photographer Frank Beres (othernaturephoto@gmail.com) at Black Creek Trail parking area on Floyd Ackert Road to explore this fascinating group of insects. Learn about the natural history of one of the most ancient lineages and pick up tips to discover\, identify\, and photograph a diverse variety of striking and colorful species. \nFrom the flitting gleam of a bluet’s wing to a speeding darner relentlessly hunting prey\, summer at Sanctuary Pond is alive with diverse\, colorful\, and intriguing insects: the Odonata (Dragonflies and damselflies). We will also explore the edges of the pond for biodiversity: birds\, butterflies\, aquatic insects\, reptiles\, and amphibians. Please email Frank to register for this outing or with questions.

SUMMARY:BREEDING BIRDS AND BUTTERFLIES
DESCRIPTION:The Esopus Creek Conservancy and John Burroughs Natural History Society are co- sponsoring a guided nature walk at Esopus Bend Nature Preserve in Saugerties on Sunday\, June 18\, 2023 to observe summer breeding birds and butterflies. We will identify birds by sight and sound as we explore the Preserve’s woodlands\, wetlands\, and meadow\, pausing along the way to observe the diversity of plant and animal life that inhabit the Preserve. As\nthe morning temperatures rise\, we will focus our attention on early summer butterflies active in the Preserve at this time of the year. Meet at the Saugerties Village Beach parking lot on US Rte. 9W\, just north of the Esopus Creek Bridge\, at the foot of Partition Street in the Village of Saugerties. Bring binoculars\, insect repellant and field guides if you have them. Be prepared for potentially wet/muddy trails\, tall grass\, and dress according to weather conditions. Light rain often makes for excellent birding and nature observation\, but will inhibit or eliminate most butterfly activity. Heavy rain will cancel the walk. Children are welcome and encouraged\, but please do not bring pets. Please register with the field trip leader Steve Chorvas (schorvas@gmail.com ) to participate and for meeting time. This joint\nECC/JBNHS Environmental Education walk is free and open to the public. For additional information about upcoming ECC Nature Walks and Paddles\, please visit www.esopuscreekconservancy.org.

SUMMARY:WADERS AND ICE CREAM
DESCRIPTION:August may be hot and humid but “fall” migration is underway and the Esopus Meadows can often harbor large concentrations of waders like Great Egrets. If water chestnut harvesting provides landing pads\, there might be shorebirds not always easy to locate in county\, too. After a tough evening of scanning the river for peeps and waders we recommend you try to recuperate over a soft serve cone post outing at the new Jolly Cow 2 (old Frozen Rainbow). Contact Wendy Tocci (wtocci@gmail.com )to register. Scenic Hudson’s Esopus Meadows Preserve is located at 269 River Road in the Town of Esopus.

Please understand\, there can be no refunds after August 1. \nThis trip will be held rain or shine\, though extreme weather conditions predicted within days of the trip will cause cancellation and warrant full refunds. \nOverview: We will explore the East and West Ponds areas of the Refuge. Proper footwear is essential for visiting the East Pond portion. Please know that this is not a trail but a very muddy and sometimes treacherous shoreline. The West Pond and “gardens” are much easier and have formalized trails (mostly crushed shell). For some this might be the option for the day. Others may choose to remain at the blinds on the smaller ponds when we cross the road. Sun protection is essential as much of this is exposed viewing. \nWhat to Bring:\nClothing: We will be outside all day. Pathways are likely to be very wet and muddy and possibly hazardous to unsteady walkers. Wear clothing suited to a changing weather conditions and biting insects\, especially ticks. Wear waterproof boots with secure treads for the trails and bring casual shoes for the bus ride. The refuge provides a boot-washing station\, though a small trash bag for boots is recommended. \nFood: Participants should bring snacks\, beverages\, and lunches with them. There will be no stop for food and none available at the refuge. \nAbout Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge\nTides on 8/19/23: Low tide 4:52 a.m. High tide 11:10 a.m. \nBirds of Jamaica Bay checklist and eBird Hot Spots information\nhttps://www.nps.gov/gate/learn/nature/birds.htm\nhttps://ebird.org/hotspot/L165143?yr=all&m=&rank=mrec\nhttps://ebird.org/hotspot/L109145?yr=all&m=&rank=mrec\nhttps://ebird.org/hotspot/L109144?yr=all&m=&rank=mrec \nJamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is one of the best places in New York City to observe migrating species. In fact\, it’s a birder’s paradise with 332 bird species sighted at the refuge over the last 25 years (38 are accidental\, and include several New York State records). \nFall shorebird migration is the most popular time for birders to visit the refuge and August usually provides the greatest diversity. The bus will arrive perfectly to coincide with a rising tide in the bay and the subsequent movement of shorebirds to the exposed mud shores of the East Pond. \nThe Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is open dawn to dusk year-round. In August\, the Visitor Center is open 7 days a week from 9 to 5. The Center has a bookstore\, natural history exhibit area\, restrooms\, and lecture room. There are no entrance fees to the refuge.

SUMMARY:SANDY HOOK BIRDING DAY TRIP
DESCRIPTION:Sandy Hook is that little “finger” at the northeast corner of New Jersey. This piece of land projects north nearly into the south bay of New York harbor. This orientation makes it a perfect spot to receive southbound birds (and western vagrants) in the fall and for this reason has earned a reputation as one of the best birding locations in the metropolitan area. Contact trip organizer Deb Weltsch (dweltsch13@gmail.com ) for meet up time and location. This will be a\ncarpooling field trip and registration will be limited so field party can move about easily while visiting the “hook”.
