DESCRIPTION:JBNHS’ 8th annual Big Sit is also our BIG fundraiser for the year (that’s why we do ours in May) but serves too as a friendly competition between the established sits. Do you have a birdy back deck or favorite patch and a cause worth birding for? Why not join the challenge and see how many species you can identify from a 17’ diameter circle and get friends and family to pledge to your effort. In the past money has been raised to help worthy endeavors like numerous enhancements at SGNWR\, support the wonderful New York State Young Birders Club\, install Where to Bird in Ulster County panels now located at four locations about the county\, and aid Annie Mardiney’s Wild Mountain Birds’ important rehabilitation work. \nGreat Vly Sit\nTeam Bobcat will again be birding Fradon Marsh from a pressure treated tower and greatly helping our cumulative JBNHS Big Sit total with all those wonderful marsh birds and maybe a surprise like another Black Tern. Support in 2021 allowed for the assembly and installation of over 30 Wood Duck boxes in the Vly! This year the Bobcats will hope to work the same magic for the Wood Ducks in Tivoli Bays. \nKingston Point Sit\nTeam CoCo Puffs will bird from Harrison Point looking out over Kingston Point Lagoon\, the mouth of the Rondout\, and down river while tallying new spring arrivals and raising needed funds for the important NYS Breeding Bird Atlas 3. \nGaleville (SGNWR) Sit\nSpend some time on the observation deck at Galeville (SGNWR) looking and listening for those ever important (and harder to find) grassland species. Team Shawangunk Redemption could have another Sandhill Crane up their sleeves. Pledges raised here will benefit continuing improvements at the refuge. Treasurer Fagan definitely has the other Kingston beat in pedigree and if you support her birding could have fundraising bragging rights too. Lin will be raising money for Nature Backpacks for local libraries.  One backpack will cost about $300 to assemble and can be checked out with a library card. They will include field guides\, maps\, magnifying hand lens\, and binoculars. The well-equipped and sturdy backpacks should be usable for many years. \nBowdery Back Porch Sit\nLocated above the Wallkill River floodplain\, with eager feeder birds\, Allan\, Lynn and possibly family and friends might spot something to add to the overall species total for the Sit. Seating is limited . \nTiffany Kersten is a Wisconsin native\, turned Texan by way of New Jersey\, Massachusetts\, and Hawaii. She holds a B.S. in Wildlife Ecology from Northland College\, and has spent over a decade as an environmental educator\, teaching raptor identification and migration with the Cape May Bird Observatory\, monitoring shorebirds on Cape Cod\, banding Honeycreepers in Hawaii\, and finally landing in South Texas where she first worked at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge\, then Quinta Mazatlan World Birding Center\, and managed the McAllen Nature Center\, before completing a Lower 48 States Big Year in 2021\, and founding her own bird guiding company\, Nature Ninja Birding Tours. She guides primarily in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas\, but can occasionally be found guiding elsewhere! \nPresentation: Birdie Big Year: Elevating Women Birders\nTiffany Kersten didn’t set out to do a big year\, but after a series of unanticipated and serendipitous events\, she suddenly found herself amidst one. As a sexual assault survivor\, she spent 2021 traveling to all corners of the Lower 48 States\, tallying birds and giving personal safety alarms to women she met along the way. Her goal was to see 700 species\, and to raise awareness of women’s safety in the outdoors. She ended up surpassing her goal and setting a new Lower 48 Big Year record of 726. In her presentation\, Tiffany will lead us through the fear\, empowerment\, struggles and healing that all played vital roles in the personal growth she experienced on this wild adventure. \n

SUMMARY:Breeding Bird Atlasing - Kelly Hollow Loop
DESCRIPTION:We are currently in the fourth year of the New York State Breeding Bird Atlas III. Volunteer citizen scientists across the state have been recording the breeding behaviors of our local bird species in order to better inform conservation efforts and assess the status of species. Spend the morning atlasing in western Ulster County in the Arena CE priority block. The Kelly Hollow Loop follows an old road and passes through a spruce forest that was planted in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. We’ll be looking for breeding behaviors including courtship\, nest building\, parents carrying food and/or feeding young as well as the presence of fledglings \nMeet at the traffic circle in Kingston at 6:30 am to carpool. SUMMARY:DRY BROOK RIDGE HIKE
DESCRIPTION:We will travel to Hardenburgh and hike to Dry Brook Ridge\, starting at the Millbrook Road trailhead. The hike will be about 8.5 miles out & back with an elevation gain of 2500′. This will be combined hiking and breeding bird atlasing\, so plan for about 8 hours total.  We will meet at 6:30AM at the park & ride near the Kingston traffic circle and car pool from there. Bring lunch\nand plenty of water.  The drive will take about an hour. \nSome Dry Brook Ridge facts from Dr. Michael Kudish’s book The Catskill Forest: A History. The ridge lacks any spruce or fir (only reaching 3465') but has 3-1/2 miles of first-growth forest\, with the trail right through the middle. It also features several bogs\, the oldest radiocarbon-dated at 6\,980 years old. We will stop for lunch and views at Penguin Rocks\, a large 270-foot talus slopes. If lucky we will find three-toothed cinquefoil here\, an arctic tundra species seen in only 8 other places in the Catskills. SUMMARY:BREEDING BIRDS AND BUTTERFLIES
DESCRIPTION:The Esopus Creek Conservancy and John Burroughs Natural History Society are co- sponsoring a guided nature walk at Esopus Bend Nature Preserve in Saugerties on Sunday\, June 18\, 2023 to observe summer breeding birds and butterflies. We will identify birds by sight and sound as we explore the Preserve’s woodlands\, wetlands\, and meadow\, pausing along the way to observe the diversity of plant and animal life that inhabit the Preserve. As\nthe morning temperatures rise\, we will focus our attention on early summer butterflies active in the Preserve at this time of the year. Meet at the Saugerties Village Beach parking lot on US Rte. 9W\, just north of the Esopus Creek Bridge\, at the foot of Partition Street in the Village of Saugerties. Bring binoculars\, insect repellant and field guides if you have them. Be prepared for potentially wet/muddy trails\, tall grass\, and dress according to weather  conditions. Light rain often makes for excellent birding and nature observation\, but will inhibit or eliminate most butterfly activity. Heavy rain will cancel the walk. Children are welcome and encouraged\, but please do not bring pets. Please register with the field trip leader Steve Chorvas (schorvas@gmail.com ) to participate and for meeting time. SUMMARY:EASTERN NABA BUTTERFLY COUNT
DESCRIPTION:Rain Date: Sunday\, July 2 \nJoin a field team to census butterflies in Esopus Bend Nature Preserve\, or one of dozens of other local sites as a participant in the annual Eastern Catskills North American Butterfly Association (NABA) “Fourth of July” Butterfly Count on Saturday\, July 1\, 2023. The Eastern Catskills count circle includes a number of productive butterfly locations in northern Ulster\, southeastern Greene\, and western Dutchess Counties\, including Poet’s Walk Preserve\, Esopus Bend Nature Preserve\, The Great Vly WMA\, Onteora State Park\, Overlook Mountain\, Lower Platte Clove\, the eastern end of Ashokan Reservoir\, and extensive open meadows in the Town of Ulster.  Participants will be assigned to a field party to census one or more target locations within the 15-mile diameter count circle. Each field party will be assigned at least one individual knowledgeable in butterfly identification\, so you don’t need to be a butterfly expert to participate.  Full-day participation is not required\, but you should be able to commit four to eight hours from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  If you are interested in joining one of the field teams\, or have additional questions about participating in a NABA Butterfly Count\, please contact Steve Chorvas at schorvas@gmail.com no later than June 12.

The bus will arrive perfectly to coincide with a rising tide in the bay and the subsequent movement of shorebirds to the exposed mud shores of the East Pond. \nThe Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is open dawn to dusk year-round. In August\, the Visitor Center is open 7 days a week from 9 to 5. The Center has a bookstore\, natural history exhibit area\, restrooms\, and lecture room. There are no entrance fees to the refuge.

DESCRIPTION:Sandy Hook is that little “finger” at the northeast corner of New Jersey. This piece of land projects north nearly into the south bay of New York harbor. This orientation makes it a perfect spot to receive southbound birds (and western vagrants) in the fall and for this reason has earned a reputation as one of the best birding locations in the metropolitan area.
