DESCRIPTION:Meet trip leader Steve Chorvas (schorvas@gmail.com ) at the parking lot between the Saugerties Big Lots and CVS on Rt. 212 for an 8:00 a.m. carpooling departure to visit the Albany Pine Bush Preserve. The preserve has 45 wildlife “Species of Greatest Conservation Need” of the 538 found in New York State. This includes 15 birds\, 14 reptiles and amphibians\, and 16 insects\, as well as\, two rare natural communities. It also supports more than 20 at-risk species that are either state or federally listed as rare or endangered including on the most famous residents\, the endangered Karner Blue Butterfly.

DESCRIPTION:SATURDAY\, MAY 6\, 2017 – ULSTER COUNTY BIG SIT Can you identify nocturnal flight notes? Do you know a location (specifically a 17′ diameter circle) in Ulster County where you could spend up to 24 hours and find the greatest diversity of bird species? Join an established sit or create your own. This can be a friendly competition but hopefully a fun and creative way for JBNHS to raise a little money to help support environmental and educational efforts locally. \nParticipants in a Big Sit should plan to spend up to 24 hours in a 17-foot diameter circle. This can be done in shifts\, or gung-ho observers may be sit the whole 24 hours. Observations of species seen or heard can only be made from within your circle. Sitters record the number of bird species heard and/or seen. The total number of species recorded from all locations will be used in calculating pledge donations. Bring snacks and folding chairs\, and enjoy this sociable way to sit still for a change. THIS IS A FUNDRAISER\, so pledge to donate per bird species observed during the Big Sit. — suggested levels are 25¢\, 50¢\, $1\, or other amount. DESCRIPTION:An early morning visit during spring migration to this new Scenic Hudson property in the Town of Esopus should provide a generous selection of neotropical migrants. SUMMARY:SPRING MIGRATION BIRDS AND WILDFLOWERS IN SAUGERTIES
DESCRIPTION:The Esopus Creek Conservancy and John Burroughs Natural History Society are co-sponsoring a guided nature walk in woodlands and wetlands in the Town of Saugerties on Sunday\, April 30\, 2017. The first week in May is typically the peak migration period for neotropical birds at this latitude\, and early morning is the best time to see and hear recently arrived songbirds in their brilliant spring plumage. We will explore a variety of ecologically rich habitats to experience this annual rite of spring\, identifying birds by sight and sound while pausing along the way to observe a diversity of wildflowers and animal life. Meet 7:30 a.m. in the Saugerties Village Beach parking lot on Rte. 9W\, just north of the Esopus Creek bridge\, at the foot of Partition Street in the Village of Saugerties. Participants can carpool and stay for the duration\, or drive to each location and leave whenever necessary. Bring binoculars\, field guides\, and spotting scopes if you have them\, and be prepared for wet\, muddy trails\, and early spring weather conditions. Light rain often makes for excellent birding and nature observation\, but heavy rain will cancel the walk. Children are welcome and encouraged\, but please do not bring pets. SUMMARY:SPRING WILDFLOWERS AT JOPPENBERGH MOUNTAIN
DESCRIPTION:Join Lynn Bowdery on a walk up to the lookout point on Joppenbergh Mountain and search for spring ephemerals\, the early spring wildflowers that grow and bloom before the trees leaf out and shade them into dormancy. Red Trillium\, Wild Columbine\, Rue Anemone\, Violets and more have been found along this route. Of course\, we can examine and discuss anything else that catches our attention. The path to the lookout rises a modest 200 feet in elevation but is steep and rocky in a few places- wear good shoes and bring hiking poles if you use them. We will meet in the parking area by Willow Kiln Park\, behind Rosendale Theater\, accessed by narrow Hardenburgh Lane\, at 10AM and plan to end at 12 noon. SUMMARY:ANNUAL WINTER BIRDCOUNT AT EBNP
DESCRIPTION:Rain Date: Sunday\, January 8\, 2017\nThe eleventh annual Esopus Bend Nature Preserve Winter Bird Count (WBC) is scheduled for Saturday\, January 7\, 2017. Participants will census the winter bird community inhabiting the 160-acre Preserve\, recording numbers of individuals and species diversity. WBC results will become part of the Preserve’s biodiversity database\, and will help provide future guidance for land management and stewardship decisions. \nMeet at the Shady Lane main entrance parking lot at 5:30 a.m. for pre-dawn owling\, or later at approximately 7:00 a.m. for the diurnal part of the survey. Esopus Bend Nature Preserve is located on the banks of the Esopus Creek in the Village and Town of Saugerties\, in northern Ulster County. Previous counts conducted during early January have recorded a cumulative total of 55 species\, and a single year high count of 966 individuals. Previous highlights include Bohemian Waxwing\, White-winged Crossbill\, Gray Catbird\, Field Sparrow\, Savannah Sparrow\, Winter Wrens\, six species of woodpeckers\, and double-digit numbers of Hermit Thrushes. \nThe WBC is a great way for birders and naturalists to start off the New Year and contribute to our knowledge of the wintering bird population inhabiting Esopus Bend Nature Preserve. Additional field observers are always welcome\, and full day participation is not required\, but you should be prepared to invest several hours out in the field under cold winter conditions.
