SUMMARY:WADERS AND ICE CREAM (NEW DATE)
DESCRIPTION:August may be hot and humid\, but “fall” migration is underway and the Esopus Meadows can often harbor large concentrations of waders like Great Egrets and if water chestnut harvesting provides landing pads shorebirds not always easy to locate in county too. After a tough evening of scanning the river for peeps and waders we recommend you try to recuperate over a soft serve cone post outing at one of the local ice cream establishments. Contact Wendy Tocci (wtocci@gmail.com ) to register. Scenic Hudson’s Esopus Meadows Preserve is located at 269 River Road in the Town of Esopus.

DESCRIPTION:PRE-REGISTER with Joan Burroughs (jjjburroughs@yahoo.com ) for field trip details of this JBA/JBNHS co-sponsored Hudson River Ramble event. SUMMARY:FALL MIGRANTS AT JOHN BURROUGHS’ WOODCHUCK LODGE
DESCRIPTION:PRE-REGISTER with Mark DeDea (forsythnature@aol.com ) to join on this JBWL/JBNHS co-sponsored bird walk around this picturesque property and charming farm house that was JB’s last home and serves as his final resting place. This area in the western Catskills was also where JB spent his childhood and first gained appreciation for the natural world. It is an area who’s small valleys and rivulets had a similar impact on the trip leader and a place hoped to visit more regularly in partnership with our sister organization. The birding should be rewarding too!

Contact Deb to register and to find out meet up time. \nMark DeDea ( forsythnature@aol.com ) will visit Seed Song Farm in the Town of Ulster (which we can pretty much guarantee will be unkempt) and provide candy on this short morning walk. SUMMARY:November Program and Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Susan Fox Rogers as below at 6PM.\nTrustees meeting to follow\, light refreshments\nprovided.\n*NOTE NEW MEETING LOCATION*\n=>D&H Canal Museum (former DePuy Canal House restaurant)\nD&H Canal Historical Society\n1315 NY 213\, High Falls NY 12440 \nWomen in the Bird World: Conservation\, Education\, Science \nWomen in the bird world are not as visible. But there are many remarkable\, brilliant\, sometimes quirky women who came before us who shaped how we see the natural world\, spearheaded conservation efforts and led lives that are inspiring. Beginning with Genevieve Estelle Jones (born in 1847)\, often referred to as “the other Audubon\,” we will look at the work and lives of seven women from the mid-1800s to the late-1900s who have shaped our thinking\nabout birds and the natural world\, and whose lives have captured the imagination of many birders. \nSusan Fox Rogers is a proud member of JBNHS\, and author of Learning the Birds: A Mid-Life Adventure\, which chronicles her first three years of birding from Florida to Alaska but mostly at home in the Hudson Valley. Her first book was My Reach: A Hudson River Memoir\, which explores the natural and built history of the river from the perspective of her kayak. She is the editor of twelve anthologies including When Birds Are Near: Dispatches from Contemporary Writers and Antarctica: Life on the Ice\, which was created with the support of a grant from the National Science Foundation. She taught the creative essay\, nature\, and place-based writing at Bard College for twenty-two years.

SUMMARY:EMPIRE STATE TRAIL/SOJOUNER TRUTH STATE PARK BIRDING
DESCRIPTION:A morning to remember everyone’s favorite Beatle with a warm\, caloric breakfast snack and some Birds & Beans coffee to help. If time allows we may even look for some birds along the dramatically improved Empire State Trail once known as “Immigrant’s Way” and maybe stroll up to the state park lot if it’s left unmowed and birdy. We will meet at the Kingston Point Beach parking lot to scan for gulls and waterfowl and can then put our scopes away for a leisurely and easy walk on a paved trail with our binoculars. Please register with Mark DeDea ( forsythnature@aol.com ) so I know how much bread pudding make.

SUMMARY:ALL DAY – ANNUAL WINTER BIRD COUNT AT EBNP
DESCRIPTION:The 21st annual Esopus Bend Nature Preserve Winter Bird Count (WBC) will be conducted on Saturday\, January 10\, 2026. Participants will census wintering birds throughout the 160-acre Nature Preserve\, recording numbers of individuals and species diversity. WBC results are part of the Preserve’s biodiversity database and will help provide future guidance for land management and stewardship decisions. Esopus Bend Nature Preserve is located on the banks of the Esopus Creek in the Village and Town of Saugerties in northern Ulster County. Previous counts conducted during early January have recorded a cumulative total of 70 species\, and a single-year high count of 966 individuals. Highlights from previous counts include Bohemian Waxwing\, White-winged Crossbill\, Gray Catbird\, Field Sparrow\, Savannah Sparrow\, Winter Wrens\, six species of woodpeckers\, and double-digit numbers of wintering Hermit Thrushes. The WBC is a great way for birders and nature enthusiasts to start off the New Year and contribute to our knowledge of the winter bird population inhabiting Esopus Bend Nature Preserve. Additional field observers are always welcome\, and full day participation is not required\, but you should be prepared to invest several hours out in the field under cold winter conditions. Pre-registration is required. Please contact Steve Chorvas (schorvas@gmail.com or 845-246-5900) to register\, or for additional information\, no later than Thursday\, January 8th. For additional information about upcoming ECC Environmental Education Nature Walks and Paddles\, please visit www.esopuscreekconservancy.org.
