SUMMARY:ANNUAL WINTER BIRDCOUNT AT EBNP
DESCRIPTION:Rain Date: Sunday\, January 8\, 2017\nThe eleventh annual Esopus Bend Nature Preserve Winter Bird Count (WBC) is scheduled for Saturday\, January 7\, 2017. Participants will census the winter bird community inhabiting the 160-acre Preserve\, recording numbers of individuals and species diversity. WBC results will become part of the Preserve’s biodiversity database\, and will help provide future guidance for land management and stewardship decisions. \nMeet at the Shady Lane main entrance parking lot at 5:30 a.m. for pre-dawn owling\, or later at approximately 7:00 a.m. for the diurnal part of the survey. Esopus Bend Nature Preserve is located on the banks of the Esopus Creek in the Village and Town of Saugerties\, in northern Ulster County. Previous counts conducted during early January have recorded a cumulative total of 55 species\, and a single year high count of 966 individuals. Previous highlights include Bohemian Waxwing\, White-winged Crossbill\, Gray Catbird\, Field Sparrow\, Savannah Sparrow\, Winter Wrens\, six species of woodpeckers\, and double-digit numbers of Hermit Thrushes. \nThe WBC is a great way for birders and naturalists to start off the New Year and contribute to our knowledge of the wintering bird population inhabiting Esopus Bend Nature Preserve. Additional field observers are always welcome\, and full day participation is not required\, but you should be prepared to invest several hours out in the field under cold winter conditions. SUMMARY:Members Trip - Winter Birding along the North Shore of Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:Travel over to the North Shore of Massachusetts from December 2nd to December 4th in search of winter seabirds. The North Shore of Massachusetts (Cape Ann and Plum Island) is known to birders worldwide for its numbers of winter seabirds. Sea ducks (long-tailed duck\, eiders & scoters)\, gannets\, and alcids (guillemots\, razorbills\, murres\, & dovekie) gather in impressive concentrations and variety\, and a careful exploration of the area’s gorgeous coastal geography is quite likely to turn up such winter bird specialties as the harlequin duck\, eared grebe and snowy owl. \nFriday\, December 2nd 12:00 PM: Meet trip leaders Jess Prockup and Wendy Tocci at Salisbury Beach State Reservation\, Parking Lot 3 for an afternoon outing to look for sea ducks\, Northern Shrike\, Lapland Longspur and even a possible harbor seal. After we have had our fill of long-tailed duck\, eiders\, scoters\, gannets and alcids\, we will check into the Fairfield Inn hotel (~$100/night double occupancy) in Amesbury\, MA. \nSaturday\, December 3rd 6:00 AM: Gather at the hotel parking lot for an early morning departure to Halibut Point State Park. Seabird watching is best is in the early morning hours. We will make several stops along the coast on our way to Gloucester for afternoon gull watching. Target birds for the morning will include alcids\, gannets\, sea ducks (including Harlequin and King Eider) and Purple Sandpipers. Iceland and Glaucous gulls are possibilities for Gloucester. \nSunday\, December 4th 7:30 AM: We will explore the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge which offers a 6.5-mile wildlife drive allowing us to view wildlife in a variety of habitats including salt marsh\, dune\, and maritime forest. There are also a number of interpretive boardwalk trails and observation towers. SUMMARY:WINTER TREE I.D. AT HIGH BANKS PRESERVE
DESCRIPTION:Dust off your winter tree and shrub identification skills as we explore High Banks Preserve in Esopus. This is Scenic Hudson’s newest park\, which features a great diversity of habitats including meadows\, successional old fields (shrublands)\, upland forests\, swamps\, and Esopus Lake- a circumneutral bog lake. Meet trip leader Nava Tabak (navatabak@gmail.com) at 9 am the park entrance\, located at 132 River Road\, Ulster Park (just a little north of Esopus Meadows Preserve). Come prepared for the weather\, a short trail climb up the high bank from the entrance\, and otherwise moderate walking along the preserve’s trails. We’ll spend a couple of hours looking at bark\, buds\, fruits\, and any other clues the woody flora might yield as winter sets in.

He is President of the New York State Outdoor Education Association. Here is a preview of what his talk will be about: \nIn any conversation about bees\, the honeybee usually takes center stage. Yet\, honeybees are not native to North America. When Europeans arrived\, nearly 4\,000 bees were already here\, pollinating the trees and plants and helping maintain the food supply. Our native bees\, sometimes described as pollen bees\, are not only extremely efficient\, but have also developed techniques for pollinating flowers that honeybees are incapable of pollinating!   \nJoin us as we explore the little known but fascinating world of native bees and learn how you can take action steps on their behalf. Join Lynn Bowdery for a leisurely exploration of this 251 acre park which overlooks the Hudson River. Fall colors should be coming on in the Park’s mature hardwood forest. Who knows what else might catch our attention there? For those who wish to keep walking\, a link connects the park to the Walkway Loop Trail. Meet at the parking area at Johnson-Iorio Park. DESCRIPTION:The Esopus Creek Conservancy and John Burroughs Natural History Society\, in conjunction with the 13th annual Lark in the Park\, are co-sponsoring a guided mushroom walk on Saturday\, October 1\, 2016. Autumn can be a very productive time of the year for mushrooms when soil moisture is favorable. Steve Chorvas and Prof. Bill Bakaitis will guide us as we explore a local woodland in search of ground and wood-dwelling mycelia. Meet 9:00 a.m. in the northeast corner of the Saugerties Plaza (near the Credit Union) on Rte. 9W just south of the Village of Saugerties. We will carpool to the location. Bring field guides and cameras if you have them. Collecting is not permitted. Be prepared for potentially wet/muddy conditions and moderate rain. Heavy rain cancels the walk. Children are welcome and encouraged\, but please do not bring pets. Pre-registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Co-sponsored by the Wallkill Valley Land Trust. Explore one of the less well-known public parks in Ulster County. Located in Rosendale\, beside the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail and looming over the iconic railroad trestle\, Route 213\, Rondout Creek and downtown Rosendale\, this 118+ acre property is owned by the Wallkill Valley Land Trust and open to the public. Lynn Bowdery will lead a leisurely ramble around the property\, and we will observe and discuss the rich natural and human history of this place. Depending on the interests of the participants\, we might take the improved path to the overlook point and enjoy the view. SUMMARY:ANNUAL PICNIC AT HUDSON RIVER MARITIME MUSEUM
DESCRIPTION:Our location will be the HRMM’s new Riverport Wooden Boat School\, right on the Rondout. Our luncheon will be catered this year by Kingston’s Stone Soup Food Company. A wide variety of salads\, wraps\, and desserts will be offered and all are house made on the premises. Options will include vegan\, vegetarian\, and gluten free but Stone Soup is well known for their house baked turkey and roast beef too! The event’s highlight will be a presentation given by Bill Wilson\, co-founder of Birds and Beans Coffee LLC. Bill has used his skills gained as a high-powered consumer marketing expert to combine the protection of vital bird habitat in the coffee-growing regions of the world with the marketing of great coffee. Birds & Beans® is the only coffee brand in the US that solely roasts Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center ‘Bird Friendly®’ certified beans\, 100% shade grown\, organic and Fair Trade certified coffee. We can expect to learn a lot about bird conservation and the business of coffee from Bill. SUMMARY:GREAT VLY PADDLE
DESCRIPTION:Please register with trip leader Wendy Tocci (wtocci@gmail.com ) to participate in this outing.  Limited parking at the DEC lot and launch make a large group difficult. “Hostess” Amy Fradon will treat attendees to a post paddle nosh overlooking the marsh.   In the late summer and into early fall this location can be very attractive to migrant shorebirds and even terns. The Vly is always a good spot to visit for species loyal to marsh habitat like Gruiformes and bitterns and a quiet paddle should allow for close inspection of some of these target species. To reach the parking area from US 9W north of Saugerties\, turn west on West Camp Road and continue 1.2 miles to the short (unpaved) access road on the right which is flanked by posts with NYS DEC signage. SUMMARY:NORTH TIVOLI BAY PADDLE
DESCRIPTION:Meet Susan Fox Rogers at the North Tivoli Bay launch at 8:00 am for a morning paddle through the bay. Visit to Magdalen Island if the weather is calm. The North Bay is always filled with treasures–Snapping Turtles\, Beavers\, Muskrat\, and a range of birds from Marsh Wrens and Swamp Sparrows to the Bald Eagles that nest just south on Cruger Island.
