DESCRIPTION:Co-sponsored by the Wallkill Valley Land Trust. Explore one of the less well-known public parks in Ulster County. Located in Rosendale\, beside the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail and looming over the iconic railroad trestle\, Route 213\, Rondout Creek and downtown Rosendale\, this 118+ acre property is owned by the Wallkill Valley Land Trust and open to the public. Lynn Bowdery will lead a leisurely ramble around the property\, and we will observe and discuss the rich natural and human history of this place. Depending on the interests of the participants\, we might take the improved path to the overlook point and enjoy the view. DESCRIPTION:Our location will be the HRMM’s new Riverport Wooden Boat School\, right on the Rondout. Our luncheon will be catered this year by Kingston’s Stone Soup Food Company. A wide variety of salads\, wraps\, and desserts will be offered and all are house made on the premises. Options will include vegan\, vegetarian\, and gluten free but Stone Soup is well known for their house baked turkey and roast beef too! The event’s highlight will be a presentation given by Bill Wilson\, co-founder of Birds and Beans Coffee LLC. Bill has used his skills gained as a high-powered consumer marketing expert to combine the protection of vital bird habitat in the coffee-growing regions of the world with the marketing of great coffee. Birds & Beans® is the only coffee brand in the US that solely roasts Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center ‘Bird Friendly®’ certified beans\, 100% shade grown\, organic and Fair Trade certified coffee. We can expect to learn a lot about bird conservation and the business of coffee from Bill. DESCRIPTION:The Esopus Creek Conservancy\, in conjunction with the 17th Annual Hudson River Valley Ramble\, is sponsoring a guided mushroom walk on Saturday\, September 10\, 2016. Autumn can be a very productive time of the year for mushrooms when soil moisture is favorable. George Johanson will guide us as we explore a local woodland in search of ground and wood-dwelling mycelia. \nMeet 9:00 a.m. in the northeast corner of the Saugerties Plaza (near the Credit Union) on Rte. 9W just south of the Village of Saugerties. We will carpool to the location. \nBring field guides and cameras if you have them. Collecting is not permitted. Be prepared for potentially wet/muddy conditions and moderate rain. Heavy rain cancels the walk. Children are welcome and encouraged\, but please do not bring pets. \nPre-registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Please register with trip leader Wendy Tocci (wtocci@gmail.com ) to participate in this outing.  Limited parking at the DEC lot and launch make a large group difficult. “Hostess” Amy Fradon will treat attendees to a post paddle nosh overlooking the marsh.   In the late summer and into early fall this location can be very attractive to migrant shorebirds and even terns. The Vly is always a good spot to visit for species loyal to marsh habitat like Gruiformes and bitterns and a quiet paddle should allow for close inspection of some of these target species. To reach the parking area from US 9W north of Saugerties\, turn west on West Camp Road and continue 1.2 miles to the short (unpaved) access road on the right which is flanked by posts with NYS DEC signage. DESCRIPTION:Meet Susan Fox Rogers at the North Tivoli Bay launch at 8:00 am for a morning paddle through the bay. Visit to Magdalen Island if the weather is calm. The North Bay is always filled with treasures–Snapping Turtles\, Beavers\, Muskrat\, and a range of birds from Marsh Wrens and Swamp Sparrows to the Bald Eagles that nest just south on Cruger Island. JBNHS will continue data retrieval started in summers past by exploring a different   portion of the refuge this year.  We hope this useful work will contribute ultimately to the creation of important documents like a refuge butterfly checklist for example. DESCRIPTION:Meet trip leader Maeve Maurer (maevemaurer@yahoo.com ) at the trailhead parking lot at 8:00 a.m. in the Town of Woodstock. To reach the lot\, take Rock City Road from the village green continuing past the four corners intersection to Meads Mountain Road. The parking lot is on your right about two miles up Meads Mountain Road. Round trip to the 3\,150 ft summit is 4.8 miles with a steady incline of 1370 ft on a old dirt carriage road. Breeding birds\, butterflies\, wildflowers\, and maybe a snake or two if we are lucky will be observed. Wear appropriate hiking shoes and pack a snack and water. Scenic views of the central Catskills\, Ashokan Reservoir\, and the Hudson Valley can be enjoyed from the summit ledges.

The Eastern Catskills count circle includes a number of productive butterfly locations in northern Ulster\, southeastern Greene\, and western Dutchess Counties\, including Poet’s Walk Preserve\, Esopus Bend Nature Preserve\, The Great Vly WMA\, Onteora State Park\, Overlook Mountain\, Lower Platte Clove\, the eastern end of Ashokan Reservoir\, and extensive open meadows in the Town of Ulster. Participants will be assigned to a field party to census one or more target locations within the 15-mile diameter count circle. Each field party will be assigned at least one individual knowledgeable in butterfly identification\, so you don’t need to be a butterfly expert to participate. Full-day participation is not required\, but you should be able to commit four to eight hours from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. If you are interested in joining one of the field teams\, or have additional questions about participating in a NABA Butterfly Count\, please contact Steve Chorvas at schorvas@gmail.com no later than June 19.

SUMMARY:Breeding Birds and Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:The Esopus Creek Conservancy and John Burroughs Natural History Society are co-sponsoring a guided nature walk at Esopus Bend Nature Preserve in Saugerties on Saturday\, June 11\, 2016 to observe summer breeding birds and butterflies. We will identify birds by sight and sound as we explore the Preserve’s woodlands\, wetlands\, and meadow\, pausing along the way to observe the diversity of plant and animal life that inhabit the Preserve. As the morning temperatures rise\, we will focus our attention on early summer butterflies active in the Preserve at this time of the year. Meet at 8:00 a.m. in the Saugerties Village Beach parking lot on US Rte. 9W\, just north of the Esopus Creek Bridge\, at the foot of Partition Street in the Village of Saugerties. Bring binoculars\, insect repellant and field guides if you have them. Be prepared for potentially wet/muddy trails\, tall grass\, and dress according to weather conditions. Light rain often makes for excellent birding and nature observation\, but will inhibit or eliminate most butterfly activity. Heavy rain will cancel the walk. DESCRIPTION:Meet trip leader Maeve Maurer (maevemaurer@yahoo.com ) at 8:00 a.m. at the informal park and ride on Rt. 32 (just south of Rt. 199 and west of the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge) to journey to this Natural National Landmark. Created by geologic upheavals when the Taconic and Berkshire ranges were formed\, this hundred foot high bedrock outcropping introduces visitors to a rugged and exotic landscape that also supports 800 species of plants (including one of North America’s greatest diversities of ferns) while offering terrific mountain vistas. There are five miles of trails on the property that travel through transitional forest and neighbor beaver ponds as well and are rated as moderate. Pack a lunch and wear sturdy\, comfortable shoes for hiking. There is a $5 admission to the property.

DESCRIPTION:Meet trip leader Steve Chorvas (schorvas@gmail.com ) at the parking lot between the Saugerties Big Lots and CVS on Rt. 212 for an 8:00 a.m. carpooling departure to visit the Albany Pine Bush Preserve. The preserve has 45 wildlife “Species of Greatest Conservation Need” of the 538 found in New York State. This includes 15 birds\, 14 reptiles and amphibians\, and 16 insects\, as well as\, two rare natural communities. It also supports more than 20 at-risk species that are either state or federally listed as rare or endangered including on the most famous residents\, the endangered Karner Blue Butterfly.
